Choosing My First Baby Gift – Ever.

I’m beginning to get to that age now where people you know are starting to get married, have kids, or do both of these things! Recently for example, a good female friend of mine had a little a little girl with her partner. She was the very first of my close friends to take a big step in to adulthood, something which the rest of us are still trying hard to fathom!

Knowing nothing about children, I was a little stumped as to what to get as a gift initially, because apparently that’s “the thing to do”. Naturally my mind instantly shifted towards LEGO. “Which kids don’t love LEGO?” I thought, until I was brought down to reality by someone pointing out that the baby would have to wait about 5 years to play with it.. Gutted as I was I begun looking around for more “age-appropriate” gifts.

After a good hunt about I settled on two gifts which I was pretty happy with! After some guidance from my girlfriend I picked up a Cath Kidston baby plate, this has a number of areas for things, which I presume is where the food goes? The one I bought is old season now, but you can still get something similar and buying from Cath Kidston directly won’t break the bank.  I think I paid £6 in Cath Kidston’s Selfridges concession for it. I know as a parent that might be a lot for a plate, but that’s what friends and family are for right!?

The second of the two items I chose was a Jellycat soother. This was well received by my friend and according to her Jellycat items are apparently quite popular with parents, so that turned out to be a win! The soother was soft and had a bunny at one end with floral material under the ears. All in all it was the perfect gift for a baby girl. I picked this up online from Twice Charmed, they had quite a selection of different designs to choose from and not just soothers but Jellycat soft toys, rattles and what I could only call “cot accessories”!

I’m not sure how everyone else gets on in these situations, but I think this experience has left me a little wiser for the next time it happens. Now all I have to do is worry about buying my first wedding present!
